Campaign Notes.

Wow, what a difference a few weeks make. Harper and the Conservastives have run a great campaign. Kept the focus on the Liberal scandals and then the income trust RCMP investigation dropped in and it gave them some traction and the poll numbers took off. I wish the media had cottoned onto these so-called "stealh" candidates a week earlier. Stockwell Day might be our next Minister of Foreign Affairs, yet where is he?, lets put his picture on some milk cartons. If we are headed for a Harper minority or majority all I can say is the (NEW) Conservatives are Scary! Remember the Mulroney era where we had Government Ministers hauled away in Handcuffs! The 42 Billion a year deficits, they QUADRUPLED our National Debt. Now, I'm not fan of the Liberals right now but they have helped give Canada a National Identity with the adoption of the Charter of Rights. They have, in my lifetime, become the fiscally conservative party. So, the Conservatives are the only Socially Conservative party in this country which goes against the 66% of Canadians who are MODERATE. The Conservatives brought free trade to our country and the Liberals brought it to our Continent which has helped our manufacturing base, but more importantly it has helped Mexico. A Conservative government is ready to supress PEOPLES RIGHTS in the name of Religion. The Supreme Court HAS protected the Traditional definition of Marriage so that Religions in Canada, who DON'T pay Taxes, won't be forced to marry Gays and Lesbians. I feel this is wrong because it still allows Churches, Mosques, Synagogues etc. to PREACH HATE against an identifiable group. There has been approx. 5000 Same-Sex marriges in Canada since the discrimatory laws were struck down, so thats 10,000 people out of 32 million that is exactly .003% of the population it REALLY doesn't affect you or anyone you know, except for maybe Wedding Planners. A new Conservative Government will scrap the Kelowna First Nations Accord. C'mon folks the genocide didn't work, the assimilation didn't work--We Really need to resolve all the First Nations Land Claims. Health Care is a PROVINCIAL responsibility, so don't bitch at Paul Martin, vote against your Premier. The Liberals have had 8 straight surpluses in a row, which under the 50/50 plan means half the surplus goes to paying off the debt, so in truth 60 Billion has gone against paying down our national debt. Lets go over what exactly Mr. Harper has promised, lowering the GST - Okay that will actually help me, according to noted economists for about $100 a year, he'll give $1200/child under 6/year--I don't have kids so that doesn't affect me directly but I know from my friends that have kids that it won't pay for ONE Month for a kid in Daycare but an 8% subsidy is better than no subsidy I suppose. Personally, for Child-Care, I think a mix of what the Liberals, NDP and Conservatives are offering is the way to go. Yes, the Liberals promised this in 1993, but since they inherited a fiscal nightmare from the PC's they couldn't deliver on til our fiscal house was put in order. Funny, the thing about the reality of crime and the perception of crime. The truth is Crime Rates across the board are down, way down, but if you ask people they'll say the opposite. Yes even murders are down nationally, however, gun murders are up and I agree with Paul Martin for a TOTAL ban on on handguns. There is no need for ANYONE to have a handgun. I don't hear a VISION for Canada from the Conservatives. I won't say who I voted for I can tell you it wasn't the Conservative Party of Canada or the Liberal Party of Canada. My view is lets get rid of Harper this time so that maybe a true progressive conservative like Peter McKay can take over than lets punt the Liberals. Harper is an idealogue. Canada doesn't need an idealogue, either left or right. Although I have to admit that Jack Layton has impressed me this go around and he'll probably end up with a few more seats and a significant increase in the popular vote and he gets how a minority government works so hopefully he'll get the balance of power he craves and this will make for a much more interesting parliament. CBC has been advirtising that Don Cherry and Ron McLean will be on their election coverage, that will make me watch them to see how it pans out.
